New exercise classes launched to help older adults stay Fit for Life

  • New fitness programme launched in Up Hatherley, Leckhampton and St Pauls
  • Weekly classes start from today, Wednesday 18 September

A new fitness programme has been launched today (Wednesday 18 September) in three community centres across Cheltenham, offering weekly community-based exercise classes for older adults.

The classes, delivered by Fit for Life Gloucestershire, aim to improve strength and balance, reducing the risk of frailty, falls, and social isolation.

Using funds allocated to the council from the NHS Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board, the council awarded a small grant of £720 to Fit for Life Gloucestershire to help bring the programme to the local community.

The location and time of the classes are:

  • St Phillip and James Church, Up Hatherley, at 10.00am
  • Emmanuel Church, Leckhampton, at 11:45am
  • School House Café, St Pauls, at 10.00am

Cllr Martin Horwood, cabinet member for economic development, wellbeing and culture, said: “I’m a big fan of these classes. For a relatively modest sum of money, Fit for Life are able to deliver these classes and for those taking part, we know that they will be able to maintain their independence, resilience and wellbeing for longer.”

Jon French, from Fit for Life, said: “I am delighted that we can continue to deliver these classes to benefit local residents in Cheltenham. We have lots of evidence that these classes help maintain strong bones, muscles and better mobility, plus they are a lot of fun, so I would encourage anyone who wants to have a go to come along and try us out. Plus, the classes are run on a pay as you go basis, so there’s no need for a contract or membership.”
