Low-energy LED lighting systems and prominent recycling bins further contribute to sustainability efforts. Royal Crescent’s Royal Connections
The discovery of health boosting waters established Cheltenham as a spa town, with this news really starting to ‘make a splash’ around 1781. By 1788 it’s reputation had spread to royal circles prompting King George III to spend 5 weeks in Cheltenham drinking the spa waters to improve his health. This royal endorsement firmly established Cheltenham as ‘the’ holiday destination for the rich and famous of the time.
Local solicitor and business speculator, Joseph Pitt, could see the commercial potential, and between 1806 and 1810 he commissioned the 18 terraced houses of Royal Crescent to be built as upmarket, fashionable guest houses for wealthy visitors. The royal connections continued with Dr Henry Charles Boisragan, Physician to the King, moving into No.11. Followed by the Duke of Gloucester residing at No.18 and welcoming young Princess Alexandrina to stay in 1832 before she ascended to the throne in 1837 as Queen Victoria.
